What Is Haptoglobin Test
A haptoglobin test is a blood test that measures the level of haptoglobin in your blood. Haptoglobin is a protein produced by the liver that binds to hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body.
When red blood cells are destroyed, hemoglobin is released into the bloodstream. Haptoglobin binds to the free hemoglobin and removes it from the blood. This prevents the hemoglobin from causing damage to tissues and organs, and also helps to recycle the iron in hemoglobin.
When Is Haptoglobin Test Performed
A haptoglobin test is often used to diagnose and monitor hemolytic anemia, a condition in which red blood cells are destroyed faster than they can be replaced. In hemolytic anemia, the level of haptoglobin in the blood is usually low because it is being used up to bind to free hemoglobin.
Test Results Interpretation
Normal range: The normal range of haptoglobin in the blood can vary between laboratories, but it is typically between 30 to 200 mg/dL. If your haptoglobin level falls within this range, it usually indicates that your body is producing enough haptoglobin to bind to the free hemoglobin in your blood.
Low levels: Low levels of haptoglobin in the blood may indicate hemolytic anemia, a condition in which red blood cells are destroyed faster than they can be replaced. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including autoimmune disorders, infections, medications, and inherited conditions such as sickle cell anemia or thalassemia.
High levels: High levels of haptoglobin may indicate certain types of inflammation or infection. In some cases, high levels may also be seen in people with certain types of cancer, liver disease, or after surgery or trauma.
