Clinical Significance :

Infertility is a common problem of couples in reproductive age. In about 9-36% of thew cases anti-sperm antibodies IAMBI have been regarded as the cause of infertility. The antibodies capable of developing auto-immunity to spermatozoa are described as a causative factor for human infertility. Although spermatozoa are wry antigenic, they are normally protected from entering the seminiferous tubules by the bkxxl-testis barrier. If this barrier sustains an insult, such as infection, trauma or surgery, sperm proteins may come into contact with the immune system, resulting in anti-sperm antibodies. These ASAB interferes with sperm motility and with the sperm's penetration of the cervical mucus and the zona pellucida. The conventional immunological mechanism by which ASAB might reduce fertility would be through binding to the receptor by which spermatozoa attach to the egg, thereby bloddng sperm-ovum interaction. 1gM is produced in the early stages on exposure of the sperm antigens to the immune system and it gradually decreases and subsequently switches to other isotypes.
