The acid phosphatase test, specifically the measurement of prostate-specific acid phosphatase (PSAP) levels, is primarily used to aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of prostate cancer. Elevated levels of PSAP in the blood may indicate the presence of prostate cancer or other prostate-related conditions. However, it is important to note that the acid phosphatase test is not specific to prostate cancer and can be influenced by other factors as well.Here are some conditions that may require an acid phosphatase test:

  • Prostate cancer: The acid phosphatase test, along with other diagnostic tests, can help assess the extent of prostate cancer and monitor its progression. Elevated levels of PSAP in the blood may indicate the presence of prostate cancer, although other diagnostic tests, such as prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test and biopsies, are also necessary for a definitive diagnosis.
  • Metastatic prostate cancer: Acid phosphatase levels may be monitored in individuals with metastatic prostate cancer to evaluate treatment response and disease progression. Elevated levels of acid phosphatase may suggest the spread of prostate cancer to other parts of the body.
  • Prostate-related disorders: Acid phosphatase levels may be measured to assess the presence or progression of other prostate-related conditions, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate), or seminal vesicle disorders.

The Acid Phosphatase test is performed by drawing a blood sample from a vein in your arm. Our phlebotomist, will clean the site with an antiseptic and apply a tourniquet to make the veins more visible. He will then insert a sterile needle into a vein and collect the required amount of blood into a collection tube.

  • Normal range: The normal range for acid phosphatase levels can vary slightly depending on the laboratory and the specific testing method used. The laboratory will typically provide a reference range based on the population they serve. Acid phosphatase levels within this range are considered normal.
  • Elevated levels: Elevated acid phosphatase levels, particularly PSAP, may indicate the presence of prostate cancer or other prostate-related disorders. However, it’s important to note that elevated acid phosphatase levels can also be influenced by other factors, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostatitis, recent ejaculation, certain medications, or other non-prostate-related conditions.
  • Trend analysis: Monitoring the change in acid phosphatase levels over time can provide valuable information. If acid phosphatase levels are increasing over consecutive tests, it may suggest disease progression or treatment failure. On the other hand, a decrease in acid phosphatase levels may indicate a positive response to treatment.
  • Correlation with other tests: Acid phosphatase test results should be considered in conjunction with other diagnostic tests, such as the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test, clinical examination, imaging studies, and biopsy results. These tests provide a more comprehensive assessment of prostate health and help guide appropriate diagnosis and treatment decisions.
